Athletes need to have confidence in their ability to be able to succeed in their sport. It is important to recognize that we all have the ability to have confidence: it can be trained and installed in us. For athletes who display self-confidence, their attitudes that they are going to win come as natural as breathing.   With the optimum power of self-confidence, they will naturally enable themselves to perform better.

If you think you will fail, you will. If you think you can win, you might. If you know you can win, you still might, but you stand a much better chance. After your opponent thinks the same as you. The secret is, to keep that confidence even when it starts to wane.

To build their power of confidence they typically:

  • Study their sport as much as they can to learn everything that they can
  • Practice every chance they can get when they’re not studying
  • Are always positive in their approach to their performance
  • Take calculated risks to improve their performance
  • Keep an “always a winner” healthy mental attitude, even when they did not win a competition
  • Never feel that they know everything realizing that there’s always something to learn
  • Focus on the positives on their performance, rather than letting their negatives control them
  • Take all criticism well whether it’s constructive or not
  • Know that it takes a lot of failures to ultimately win the most. (This may be the most important lesson to learn, as it shows you new ways to succeed!) Psychologists refer to three different types of confidence for athletes:

  1. Diffidence – The opposite of confidence is a feeling of apprehension or awkwardness experienced when a person is in proximity to, approaching or being

Diffidence is a complete lack of self-confidence for athletes. Athletes who experience this are not going to perform to their potential as they’re usually too scared to focus is on their abilities. Instead, they dwell on their fear of failure and this many times leads them to withdraw from the competition.   Many children suffer from this when they come up against other children who have better equipment trainers or coaches. This lack of confidence will see athletes making excuses for their performance even before they take part in their event.

Optimal confidence for athletes means that the goals they set are realistic and they’re often achieved. They have the ability to look at their performance objectively and have the courage and heart to keep motivated and carry on with their training programs and competitions even when they don’t feel their best or when boredom starts to set in.

Athletes who are over-confident, however, have trouble improving their game because they already think they know everything about the game. Over-confidence can also be referred to as “false-confidence”. This is because the athlete has a skewed mental image of how they can perform and what their abilities are. They may already believe that their technical abilities are the best they can be, and as such, they don’t improve their performance.

 

Self-doubt and how it affects power of confidence for athletes  

The definition of self-doubt is to have a “lack of confidence in oneself and one’s abilities or thoughts”   The worst enemy of confidence for athletes is self-doubt. Self-doubt and anxiety can have a huge effect on an athlete’s performance. This is particularly true for most all sports, but even more so for sports \ such as golf, baseball, basketball or rugby, where the player focuses on an earlier bad shot or pass rather than thinking positively on the rest of the game. The athlete can’t afford to replay the negative shots in their mind in this case but should be focusing on the positive shot they are yet to take.   Self-doubt can actually destroy confidence for athletes because self-doubt is nothing more than fear and fear is the worst enemy of confidence for athletes. Athletes that are focused on winning won’t let their self-doubt and negative thoughts enter their mind, so their self-confidence remains strong.   On the other hand, athletes who let self-doubt enter their minds notice diminished skills and are tentative in their behavior, a complete reversal from their skills being automatic. This is a display of what fear does to confidence. The two cannot coincide.   Another sign of fear is when self-doubt affects how an athlete sees themselves in front of an audience. They suddenly experience fear that they will look bad in front of everybody and won’t want to perform. Even if they have the skills to win, their self-doubt will affect them mentally. It can manifest itself in a cramp, injury or just loss of concentration. Athletes that have confidence in their abilities are athletes who have their fears under control.   This is why practice is so important. The best reason to practice is that athletes who are confident in their abilities at a lower competitive level, won’t be affected by self-doubt when they reach higher levels of competition.Practice makes their responses automatic when the game is on.

How to overcome self-doubt and a lack of confidence for athletes

  Remembering past victories is always a good way to increase confidence, but what if you have no victories? For athletes who are looking for their first win, emulating what they’ve seen in the best players in the game is the best way to increase your knowledge, which in turn will increase your confidence.   Practice is key to overcoming self-doubt and a lack of confidence for athletes. As mentioned above, practice makes your actions and reactions of the game become automatic so when the doubts start to enter your mind, the automatic actions your body learned while practicing overcome those doubts and allow you to keep up the confidence in your game.   The repetition of a positive statement or belief should become an athlete’s mantra. They need to visualize themselves acting out this statement. For example: “I am the greatest” (Mohammed Ali). Affirmations are key to confidence for athletes. Make affirmations part of your daily routine. This is the best and easiest manner on which to build your self-confidence. Affirmations work to train your sub-conscience mind to think in positive ways. Write out several positive statements to improve your game and keep them with you at all times so you can look at them when you’re not doing anything else. Do this until you internalize all of them and can repeat them verbatim. without looking at them Only then will they become embedded in your subconscious. Be careful not to extend your confidence into arrogance. When you allow that to happen, your narcissism gets in the way and destroys all you’ve accomplished, to build your confidence. When writing your affirmations, you need to focus on specific achievable goals. This makes the challenge manageable and will motivate you to achieve those personal goals. Once you achieve them, create higher goals to achieve. Make affirmations for those goals, internalize them and repeat until you’ve achieved all you want to achieve.

Always make your goals positive. Aim for targets to benefit mankind as well as yourself, always keeping in mind how you want to be remembered. Do you want to be remembered for what you did for mankind or to mankind? Both types had plenty of confidence, but what they’re remembered for, is what they used that confidence for. Did they use it for mankind? Or did they use it for selfish purposes? In the case of the latter, what then, did they do, to mankind? I’ve learned the more selfless you are the less selfish you tend to be. One attribute can replace the other, but it depends on your affirmations. If they’re positive and constructive, you’ll probably end up being a blessing to mankind.

If your affirmations are negative and full of fear, you’ll end up alienating a lot of people, who will eventually turn against you, which will ultimately keep you from reaching your goals. Negative affirmations always lead to fear and fear always leads to anger. That is the reason in itself not to make any affirmation negative. Negativity leads to fear. Fear is counterproductive. It’s only useful for tyrants. Do you want to be thought of as a tyrant or would you rather be thought of as a benefit to mankind? Your answer will dictate how you make your affirmations and that in turn will dictate what kind of a person you’ll turn into. That means, don’t just aim for success. Aim for how you can benefit man, through your actions and choices, that bring you success.

Affirmations are something that should become part of your regular day. Read them to yourself right after you get out of bed every morning and right before you go to bed every night. Being Self Confident at Work and How It Affects Your Performance

Being self-confident at work is the most important aspect of success in any career. Those lacking it will always be lacking the success they set out to achieve when embarking on their career. Those who have it, seem to have no problems achieving their goals in their careers. I shouldn’t have to tell you how it affects your performance.

Being confident at work is that delicate space between shattered self-esteem and an arrogance laced ego or your assumed self-confidence; it makes a difference. My years of coaching has taught me that those who are successful believe that their own self-confidence has been significantly enhanced by the positive actions, behaviors, and successes of those they have worked with or observed. If this is true, then as managers and leaders we have an obligation to manage our own self-confidence levels, and moreover, to inspire others to positively manage theirs.

Experience tells me, that for many, self-confidence levels are well below a successful mindset. Indeed, they are much more fragile than we would imagine. I would suggest that, within my coaching practice, confidence at work levels, in the majority of people I see, are well below healthy levels. Being self-confident in the workplace is generally described as a mental state of being certain or self-assured with any thought or situation in the moment. It might be viewed as an emotional state of mind or belief in oneself to step forward and succeed.

What self-confidence at work does is enable individuals to obtain control of situations or circumstances rather than being controlled by them. In doing so, it can assist in relieving anxiety or unnecessary and unhealthy fears. More importantly, it can set positive expectations for positive outcomes.

I submit this presumption, that confidence at work is earned. It’s something you have to achieve and build. Which more often than not, can present problems, especially if you don’t have any, to begin with. In fact, you can learn how to use your confidence at work as a means to out-perform others around you. Believing in yourself allows you to gain the upper hand on those who are unable to model those same positive beliefs. It means that in all situations, and regardless of who is around you, you can feel in control.

Of course, that means you must be willing to take all necessary steps to accomplish what is set out in front of you. Your self-confidence is the foundation for your personal and professional successes. Never allow anyone to strip away the confidence at work you have in yourself. At all levels of an organization, people are individuals. Or, more to the point, they have been provided with the knowledge or power that you or they feel gives them power over you.

The reality is that they came into the world the same way and they will leave the same way – with a first and final breath. What individuals have been exposed to during their lives and what they have learned or how they choose to use what they have experienced is what positions them in relation to others. In fact, on a personal note, I know I have observed and experienced both high and low levels of confidence at work regardless of stature, role or title.

Very early in my career, I had the opportunity to get to know on the president of the company on a personal level. On one particular occasion, I was out in a canoe with him on a lake at his summer home. I was trying to be very exact with all of my actions. My dialogue was stiff and uncomfortable, more or less saying “Yes sir, no sir, three bags full sir”. As we approached the dock, and he stepped out of the canoe, he tipped me into the lake. As he extended his hand to help me out of the water with a friendly smile he casually reminded me that like everyone else he liked to have fun too. I never forgot that lesson; that conversation instilled within me a level of confidence at work for all the years that followed.

I learned how to treat people more senior than I. While I treat more senior people with the respect they deserve and have earned, the fact is, they really are the same as you and I. We all deserve and should earn the proper degree of personal respect. Consider that the interaction and observations you will have with individuals along the road to success could significantly influence your learning and the development of your own self-confidence.

Manage Stress – Stress is the biggest enemy of being confident at work in the workplace simply because stress is nothing more than fear and fear breaks down any self-confidence that you’ve built up.  According to Dr. Daniel Amen‘s book Use Your Brain To Change Your Body chronic stress restricts blood flow to the brain, which lowers overall function and prematurely ages the brain. In part, this happens because cortisol, a stress hormone, has been shown to slow down processes in the brain due to its extended high levels. Research studies have shown that people with continuously elevated levels of cortisol have a smaller hippocampus, the area of the temporal lobes involved with memory. Without memory, your overconfidence at work becomes nothing more than arrogance and arrogance in itself is only the self-perception of confidence at work. In order to achieve being fully confident at work, one needs to manage their stress by not allowing fear to enter into the equation. Control your fears and you can control the stress. Manage Upward – On many occasions, I have done what I could to manage up or become a coach for my manager. For example, I have given them tips on how things might work best or alternatives that work well in prior similar situations. One of the easiest ways to proceed is to simply ask how they felt about how something unfolded or how they might have done it differently. In the 21st century, you cannot afford to not improve your abilities if the opportunity presents itself. Especially in hard economic times, opportunities for more education may not be as readily available as you would like.

Education is key when you want to gain self-confidence at work. So you need to take control of your education.  Set aside some time aside each day to read more to develop your skills. Make it a habit. It might be reading trade publications. It might be reading a book related to your field. The best time to do is first thing in the morning or right before bedtime.

And another thing that really helps is to find another person or a group who share your desire for improvement. You can motivate each other, discuss what you have learned and share ideas with each other to understand better all the nuisances of your duties. To gain self-confidence at work, you just need to improve a little bit each day, and pretty soon, you will notice a huge difference.

Your capabilities will define the confidence you feel. The greater your capabilities, the greater your self-confidence. As you increase your self-confidence, you will feel more compelled to improve yourself and ultimately the more you’ll gain self-confidence at work.

The affirmations must be positive, encouraging and action-oriented to change your behavior for the best. You should sit down and write out several positive affirmations on how you see yourself as an ideal employee or affirmations of what you want to achieve in your work or even in life. Here are some affirmations to get you started:

  • I always seek to know as much as I can for all positions I may need to hold.
  • I get along with everyone I work with to create a harmonious environment.
  • I accept criticism with enthusiasm so I can always keep improving the work I do.
  • Realizing that self-confidence comes through knowledge followed by actions, my actions always show that my knowledge is unsurpassed in my field.
  • I am understanding when mistakes are made, whether by me or a co-worker and always seek to learn from those mistakes, without placing blame or responsibility on anyone.

These are just a few affirmations to get you started on your list of affirmations. A good idea is to write each one on a  separate index card and carry them in your pocket to read to yourself when you have time do so. I always read between 10 and 20 affirmations every day to subconsciously change my behavior and gain self-confidence at work for myself.

How you think about yourself is the going to tell others how they should think about you. This doesn’t mean that you should be arrogant and boastful. True self-confidence doesn’t have to boast. Quite often, silence is its best partner. Most boastful people hide behind their boastful attitude because of their lack of confidence. They know that they can’t back up their words with action so they have to bluff their show they know what they’re doing.

A person who’s truly self-confident in his actions already knows everything he’s talking about so there’s no need to brag about it. Those who shut their mouths and listen, always learn more than those who keep talking, for it’s impossible to listen while you’re talking. Everyone I know has heard this phrase in many different ways, “God gave you two ears and one mouth, use them accordingly”, meaning you should listen twice as much as you talk.

Everyone who needs to gain self-confidence at work needs to heed this advice on how can you expect to learn anything without listening. Remember it’s knowledge that allows you to gain self-confidence at work and the more you know about what’s going on around you the more confidence you can have in your situation.
