Improving Your Self Confidence At Work

Improving Your Self Confidence At Work

Have you been told that you could be doing a better job or that more is expected out of  you, where you work? Are your superiors second  guessing your work? If you are having difficulties, have you tried improving your self confidence at work? Self confidence is part of the attitude that will help you to have a positive and realistic view of the situation you are in. The best option for improving your self confidence at work is laid out in simple steps below. Try improving your self confidence at work in the following areas:

Superiors

We all have them. We’re obligated to do what we’re told to do. Even the CEO of your company answers to the board of directors who in turn answers to the stock holders. Only in a sole proprietorship does one entity control everyone in the company. All with the exception of his customers. If you haven’t figured it out by now, everyone has to answer to someone. There’s just no getting away from it.

All that means is, there is someone we’re all responsible to. For there’s somebody over all of us, regardless of the position we hold. Since we carry the responsibility for the position we’re in, we must take care that we fulfill that responsibility the best we can. That means that we need the self confidence necessary for the position we hold to fulfill that responsibility in the best interest of the company. That means that the more responsibility you’re capable of, the more responsibility you’ll be given and compensated for. So I hope you can see, now, how important improving your self confidence at work really is.

Skills

This could also be listed as knowledge because skills are little more than the knowledge you possess for your job or career. The more you know about what you’re doing, the more self confidence at work you’ll have. That just goes without saying. If you think your self confidence at work is lacking, it may be time to hit the books to study more about your line of work. Observe others in your department and study what they do right and what they do wrong. The best thing you can do on top of that is to ask. Never be ashamed about what you don’t know.  Confidence begins with knowledge and how can you know if you don’t ask?

Coworkers

For some people it is never easy to work with coworkers. But for others, they can get along with anybody, while others yet can’t seem to work alone. They require someone to work with in order to get the job done. Are you one of those who do much better working alone, or are you more productive working with someone else? There are many differences in individuals while working together, like working styles, skills, ego problems, communication gaps and temperament. If you’re having any problems in any of these areas, maybe you should learn how to work with others. A really good start is to read How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie, quite possibly the best reading anyone can do for confidence at work.

This book will not only help you in your current position, but it will help you throughout your career. I would even suggest that you read to two or three times to internalize it. When you do this the material you learn in the book works its way into your sub-conscious mind and makes your actions automatic, which in turn affects your personality. Once your personality is affected your self confidence at work just follows along without you even realizing it. Another great book to read is The Power Of Positive Thinking by Dr  Norman Vincent Peale

Pointers to improve your confidence:

  • Set yourself small goals initially and then build upon them. Small goals are easy to achieve and every time you meet a goal, your confidence grows.
  • Even when you do not feel confident, “fake it ’til you make it”. Be cautious with this one as sometimes faking it can be misconstrued as arrogance. Arrogance has tendency to be taken for boasting where confidence is silent.
  • Encourage yourself to think positively. Avoid negative self-talk. Negative self talk is actually a product of fear and fear and confidence cannot co-exist.
  • Surround yourself with successful, confident people. Get to know as many as you can. Pick their brains, ask them what lead to their success, what they had to do and how they did it, etc.
  • Don’t concern yourself with doubts. Believe in yourself and strive hard to achieve your goals. Make this a habit. Use affirmations to achieve this. For more information visit
  • Be polite and always have a cheerful nature. Always smile when approaching other people. Smiles are a sign of confidence.
  • Be a good listener. You have two ears and one mouth. Use them accordingly. If you’re in sales, a good salesperson always listens more than they talk.
  • Everyone has problems at work at some point – in most cases, making improvements to your self confidence can work wonders.
